Ingredient Series: Hyaluronic Acid.

Ingredient Series: Hyaluronic Acid.

Why is everyone talking of Hyaluronic Acid? Is it magic? Is it an all rounder? What is your top top Hyaluronic Acid product? Calm down. We will tell you everything.

So here it is in simple, crisp bullet format so you don't have to read a lot.

  • Natural substance found in the human body. We have it most when we are babies but it decreases with age (more on this below).
  • Polysaccharide (sugar molecule) with high water retention capacity. Attracts and binds up to 1000 times its weight in water.
  • Major component of skin, connective tissues, and eyes. It is everywhere.
  • Plays a crucial role in skin hydration and lubrication.
  • Used in skincare products for moisturizing and anti-aging effect.
  • Can be derived from natural sources or synthesized in labs. And serves multiple functions based on its molecular size (curious? More on this below).
  • Non-allergenic and suitable for most skin types.

Okay so if it is already present in my body then why should I apply skincare products that have it? The answer is that as we age, the body produces less and less of it. So, applying products with HA helps with hydration. But it needn't be HA it can be other molecules with the same properties too - just that HA is among the best there is.

Fine. What does it do?

Like we said, it is one of the best. So here are the key key properties in crisp simple bullet form again!

  • Intense moisturizing & hydrating. Makes your skin appear fresh!
  • Anti-ageing & firming. Keep those wrinkles away!
  • Enhancing the skin barrier. Hello new skin cells!
  • Rejuvenating & has wound healing effects. Keeps breakouts at bay!
  • Prevents clogged pores. Uff no acne, blackheads or whiteheads!

Still wondering why it is almost magic?

Okay got it. Sounds good. So how does it change with age?

Here's a reduced version of each bullet point, capturing the essence in 200 characters or less:

  • Birth: High HA levels in embryos cause plump baby skin. Levels decrease from birth due to external factors.
  • At 30: HA loss becomes noticeable in epidermis. Skin loses moisture retention, shows fatigue.
  • At 40: Wrinkles and aging signs set in. HA levels drop further. Skin loses volume, cells struggle to communicate and repair.
  • At 50: Drastic HA decreases a lot. Skin loses volume, lines deepen. Diet changes recommended for healthy skin.

So the long and short of it is that you should start hydrating your skin in your late 20s to make sure that you delay skin damage and ageing :)
